News from the Gwinnett Herald The Write Bite by W. B. Williams, D. M. D. First article printed in the September 22, 1997 issue Lasers have come to dentistry. Lasers vary in their use according to their wave length. Coherent laser light is produced using carbon dioxide, erbium-Yag or Argon gases. Carbon Dioxide lasers are like tiny scalpels. They are very useful for bloodless surgery, speedier healing and finer control of soft tissue contours. Argon lasers speed the, bleaching processes and help set tooth colored fillings faster and harder. The Eribium - Yag laser is the first dental laser okayed by the FDA to begin work on teeth. It works well on dentin (inside layers of the tooth) and in removing caries. What are the chances that your dentist has a laser? Low but improving. They are relatively new, cost $15,000 - $35,000 each and are being incorporated into practices more each year. As with all significant medical innovations, the more people know and ask about lasers benefits, the more dentists will utilize them in treatment of dental disease. I hope you can sink your teeth into into this! Each week we'll explore your favorite topics in dentistry.
